Palekh artist Nebogatova's dreamlike style brings the tale of "Cinderella" to life. Her limited palette adds a sense of enchantment to the maiden's famous flight. Her carriage waits in the background, the horses pacing anxiously as she flies down the marble palace steps. The prince leans out of a turret, trying desperately to get just one more glimpse at her as he clutches the forgotten shoe. It seems that her fairy godmother has found her first, and is enforcing her midnight curfew. What were once her fine coach, horses, and attendants appear before her as a fat pumpkin, lizards and snakes, and plump mice who scurry out of her way. Cinderella's apron appears to sprout beneath the peplum of her gown, as it gives way to her usual servants attire. Soon, a single golden slipper, and happy memories will be all that remains of the mystery lady at the ball. Evgeniya Nebogatova has used bold and vivid brushstrokes fill up every centimeter of space in the drawing, but her masterful composition creates a complex and fascinating scene, rather than a cluttered one. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the artist's name, village, and date of completion. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer. The base of this piece is flush.--BOX1266
