The pretty girl with braids in her hair holds the most beautiful flower in the world, the Scarlet Flower, in this scene from the Russian fairy tale of the same name (which you can read here). The box is small and the artist's intentions here are modest, but overall it is quite lovely, particularly in her face which has a soft realism not usually seen in a box at this price range. The artist, I. Shabanova, has also taken more care than normal in doing the ornamentation on the side, where she has a intricately embellished the traditional gold decoration with some some blues and reds. The base color of the sides and bottom is black, the inside is red. The box is made out of high quality papier mache and has a hinge at the left. It is signed with the name of the artist and village.
