A chaotic scene unfurls as the village lazybones, Emelya, catches a magic pike who offers to grant the lad's every wish if he spares the pike's life. Emelya immediately agrees; he may be lazy, but he is not an idiot! His first wish sends the heavy buckets of water sloshing home by themselves, a second dispatches an empty sled and axe to fetch firewood, and the third brings his favorite napping place, the heavy stove, to life as a prancing conveyance for the slug-a-bed. News of these wonders spreads from the tiny village to the Tsar's palace. Emelya is summoned so the Tsar can see the strange magic for himself, but it is Emelya who is awe-struck as he sees the Tsar's beautiful daughter and wishes her to fall in love with him! The vibrant reds and rich blues of the scene beautifully convey the excitement and energy of the scene, while the action packed composition perfectly suits the chaos caused by Emelya's new powers. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the title, artist's name (E. Khromov), and village. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer. It rests on four curved legs.
