Sergei Zotov (brother of Fedoskino master Nikolai Zotov) is a highly talented and creative artist, as is clear in this unusually-shaped box showing three young villagers riding on a sled during a festive winter day. The box is shaped roughly in an oval, but the front end rests lower than the rear, so the top slopes downward like the hill the three people are sledding on.

The drawing is quite precise and very well-executed. There are good details in the background, for example in the little wooden kiosks towards the top of the lid. The people are drawn in Zotov's distinctive style. The people in the background have expressive poses and quite good facial features, even though they are tiny! There is a mother-of-pearl inlay in the church in the background, and another one in the skirt of the girl on the right. You can really feel the cool crisp air and the wind rushing by as they all enjoy themselves,

Zotov paints another scene around the sides and back of the box, depicting a group of villagers dancing to an accordion-player's music. Not only are these characters drawn quite well, especially for their small size, but there is also some pretty architecture in the background. Zotov clearly has both depth and range as an artist, and the sculptural quality of the box works very well with the drawing.

The box is made of high-quality papier-mache, with a hinge on the left side of the lid. The base color for the outside is a vibrant, medium blue (which is a bit less purple than the photos suggest.). The interior is traditional red. The work is signed on the little lip at the front of the box with the artist's name, village and the year (2002).
