This box by Chekalova features a scene from "The Tale of the Golden Cockerel." Tsar Dadon fears that his enemies will attack him now that he is old. When he asks his magician for the solution, the magician produces an enchanted golden cockerel, which will crow at any sign of danger. His only payment was to be anything he wanted, after two years. The cockerel made a fine watchman, and Dadon's kingdom lived in peace for two years. Then the cockerel began crowing as it never had, warning of unseen danger. When three squadrons of men sent to investigate did not return, Dadon went himself. He found a beautiful woman, the Shamakha Queen, and is now returning with her to his palace. The cockerel seemingly goes mad at this, and begins to attack him, as his soldiers watch, helplessly. Brighter tones of the soft Mstera palette add to the drama of the scene. The action of the composition is lively, indeed, as the old Tsar loses his crown in an attempt to flee the bird. The landscape behind them roils from day to night as they progress from the queen's camp to Dadon's large citadel. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the title, artist's name, and village. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer. It stands on four small, round legs, and bears the Mstera insignia on the base. A handsomely executed fairy tale scene.
