Artist Profile - Evgenij G. Merkulov

Artist Image

Evgenij Merkulov was born in 1960 in Moscow and graduated with honors from the Fedoskino art school in 1983. A few years later he went to St. Petersburg and ended up taking an entrance exam at the Academy of Art, which he passed. "I wanted to try something different" Merkulov says "and I went to St. Petersburg to just nose around. Surprisingly for myself I passed the exams at the Academy. I am grateful and fortunate to have my mother as my first art teacher!" His thesis at the Academy concerned the problem of space in Fedoskino miniatures.

While continuing to perfect his skills in painting Russian boxes, Merkulov worked as a teacher in the Fedoskino Art School for 5 years, receiving a letter of special thanks from the Ministry of Culture. Besides boxes, Merkulov also does watercolors and oil paintings. In his works he likes to show different types of people and their characters. The images of philosopher, thinker and scientist are close to his heart and he uses a lot of symbolism in his works. Occasionally he does landscapes, but in a unique and original style. Merkulov is interested in Russian people and Russian history. He lives in Moscow with his wife Julia and their daughter Alisa who studies at school. The Merkulovs love good adventures and travel with pleasure. During their travels, Evgenij often makes non-professional movies - sketches about his life - which help him in his works.
